The background shadow figures are people Patty no longer spins for. Dramatic contrasts emphasize the importance of the dancer. When Weaver began this painting, she believed the dancer was sad. Then, Patty realized that she was not sad, but free.

The kinetic energy of the dancer spins off all negativity. Shades of blue create a glow of light similar to the northern lights. Patty produces a feeling of movement in her brush strokes by using unusual painting tools — some include credit cards, spatulas and fingertips.
